Organisiert von der Klasse von Frau Logeswaran durften wir vor Kurzem im Geschichtsunterricht eine besondere Veranstaltung erleben: Benjamin Haase von der Helmut-Kohl-Stiftung besuchte unseren Kurs und nahm uns in einer eindrucksvollen Multimedia-Präsentation mit auf eine Reise durch die deutsche Geschichte.
Könntest du dir vorstellen, von deiner Familie und deinen Freunden getrennt zu sein, nur weil eine Regierung das so bestimmt? Wahrscheinlich nicht. Genau solche Fragen standen sinnbildlich über unserer „multimedialen Zeitreise“, die vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis hin zur Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands führte. Dabei erhielten wir spannende Einblicke in die Teilung Deutschlands in BRD und DDR und die sehr unterschiedlichen Lebensrealitäten in beiden Staaten.
Besonders hängen geblieben ist uns der Bezug zur Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 1974: Zum ersten und einzigen Mal trafen Ost- und Westdeutschland bei einer WM aufeinander. Die DDR gewann überraschend mit 1:0 – ein Spiel, das im Kontext des Kalten Krieges weit mehr war als nur Fußball. Gleichzeitig wurde die BRD in diesem Turnier Weltmeister.
Auch die Fluchtgeschichten aus der DDR haben uns sehr beeindruckt. Eine Familie schaffte es beispielsweise erst im zweiten Versuch, mit einem selbstgebauten Heißluftballon in die BRD zu fliehen. Die Materialien dafür ließen sie sich über Bekannte und Verwandte aus ganz Deutschland zuschicken – ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel für Mut, Hoffnung und Durchhaltevermögen.
Zum Abschluss wurde das bekannte Zitat von Helmut Kohl aufgegriffen:
„Wer die Vergangenheit nicht kennt, kann die Gegenwart nicht verstehen und die Zukunft nicht gestalten.“
Gerade heute wirkt dieser Satz sehr aktuell. Angesichts zunehmender antidemokratischer Entwicklungen wurde uns noch einmal bewusst, wie wichtig es ist, sich mit der Vergangenheit auseinanderzusetzen, um die Gegenwart zu verstehen und die Zukunft verantwortungsvoll mitzugestalten.

Organised by the class of Ms Logeswaran, we recently had the opportunity to take part in a special event during our history lessons: Benjamin Haase from the Helmut Kohl Foundation visited our course and guided us through an impressive multimedia presentation on German history.
Could you imagine being separated from your family and friends simply because a government decides so? Probably not. Questions like this formed the central idea behind our “multimedia journey through time”, which took us from the end of the Second World War to the reunification of Germany. Along the way, we gained fascinating insights into the division of Germany into the FRG and GDR and the very different realities of life in both states.
One particularly memorable moment was the reference to the 1974 FIFA World Cup: for the first and only time, East and West Germany faced each other in an official match. The GDR surprisingly won 1–0 – a game that, in the context of the Cold War, meant far more than just football. At the same time, however, West Germany went on to become world champions in the same tournament.
We were also deeply impressed by the stories of escape from East Germany. One family, for example, only succeeded on their second attempt, escaping to West Germany in a homemade hot-air balloon. The materials were sent to them by friends and relatives from all over Germany – a powerful example of courage, hope, and determination.
To conclude, we reflected on Helmut Kohl’s famous quote:
“Those who do not know the past cannot understand the present and cannot shape the future.”
Even today, this statement feels highly relevant. In light of growing anti-democratic developments, we were reminded of the importance of engaging with history in order to understand the present and take responsibility for shaping the future.
